Charleston, South Carolina is a sea kayakers paradise! An historic harbor, open ocean, challenging inlets, barrier islands, tidal rivers, blackwater rivers and large freshwater lakes are all within a 1 hour drive. The area is a hub for sea kayak instruction - click on the links for more details. Coastal South Carolina (known as the Lowcountry) rarely dips below freezing - winter temperatures in the 70s are not uncommon. Click here for a calendar of Charleston sea kayak happenings.
"Is it cold down there?" Click here for the latest weather conditions and forecast.

Wildlife abounds on the barrier islands and in the protected forests. Many species of birds can be spotted throughout the year. Just a few of the favorites are the Brown Pelican, Black Skimmer and the American Oystercatcher. But watch out for the Laughing Gulls - they are up to no good! The Lowcountry is a herpetologists delight: many species of snakes, lizards and turtles can be found - including the Loggerhead Sea Turtle which nests throughout the spring and summer along the barrier islands. Of course, the American Alligator is common in brackish and freshwater environments.

The sea kayak community (the Pod) is active throughout the year. The area club - the LowcountryPaddlers - runs sponsored and informal trips. Informal groups organize trips via email. Paddlers from around the world gather on James Island - 10 minutes from downtown Charleston - for the East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival every April. The festival is sponsored by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC). CCPRC has an active instruction and sea kayak trip program all year 'round.

The sea kayak Pod is a community of highly developed amphibious mammals that spend part of their time on the water; and the rest of their time wishing that they were on the water. Sometimes solitary, they are more often found together enjoying their passion as a cohesive group. The Pod.
Egocentric paddlers are more often seen alone - but when they get together - they travel in an I-Pod.
